Urban Retreat

This overgrown back garden in South London was a dark and uninviting space, which was rarely used.  The aim was to create a peaceful haven from busy urban life.  This young, professional couple wished to harness a contemporary Zen feel, with space to entertain, relax and work.

Distinct levels were created to form three separate outdoor “rooms”, linked by wide shallow steps. The first level provides a spacious dining & entertaining space and acts as an extension to the interior living spaces. The cantilever cedar bench maximises space without adding bulk to the design, and the bamboo framing the seating area and side return softens the clean white lines of the rendered walls.

The middle level is a reflective, relaxation space.  The black limestone leads from the lower level, but here is softened by the moss carpet, inviting you to kick off your shoes and enjoy the contrast of the smooth limestone with the velvety moss beneath your feet.

The upper level accommodates a small outdoor studio/workspace to retreat to, behind soft grasses.

The fencing was replaced on both sides of the garden and was designed to reinforce the horizontal lines of the garden and provide privacy without blocking out light.

"Jennifer transformed our garden from an overgrown waste land to a stunning modern practical space. Jennifer was a joy to work with and her designs are beautifully drawn and easy to understand. We now have our dream garden! Thanks Jennifer for creating a little bit of paradise for our family to enjoy."
