From clutter to calm

This small and shady back garden was full of potential, but instead felt cluttered and uncomfortable.  With the existing shapes of the beds following the lines of the boundaries, the sides felt as though they were closing in and it was confused & unwelcoming.

A simple palette of materials was used to tie in to the house and clearly define areas. Carefully positioned focal poitns  give the spaces purpose and draw the visitor in to the garden and to explore further.  Seating was placed to take advantage of the best views, which can be found even in a small space, and the last of the evening sun.  The planting scheme was designed to be easy to maintain and provide interest throughout the year.

The use of strong lines and the introduction of the single span pergola has redefined the proportions and brought balance in to the garden.  It feels twice the size, but at the same time offers sanctuary.

With thanks to New Leaf Landscapes  who worked so well under the extremely challenging circumstances of a global pandemic to help create an inviting space the client is now enjoying and is a pleasure to spend time in.

Now framed with a pergola, which will in time be draped with climbing roses, the terrace is an open, inviting & scent-filled space.
